For me, it was the script and the acting of Roy Thinnes (not sure he was doing any "acting" at all) that let the film down. Although the Andersons incorporated adult themes into their script in an effort to distinguish the film from their children's TV productions, cuts to more mature content, in this case a shot of a pack of contraceptive pills, were required to permit an A and, later, PG certificate from the BBFC.

The sci-fi premise of there being a duplicate of Earth and the trip by two astronauts to explore it are intriguing, but most of the space-based sequences are overlong, as if the director was trying to emulate Kubrick's 2001.
