Vincent Canby of The New York Times gave the film a negative review, stating that "The story, as well as Peter Yates's direction of it, is juvenile without being in any attractive way innocent, but the underwater sequences are nice enough, alternately beautiful and chilling. After Wall’s death, the documentary turned into something very different: an opportunity to study a murderer before his first kill. They also said he had asked other women to join him on his submarine that same week but no one else had come.Madsen was given a life sentence after a judge ruled that Wall’s murder was cynical and planned. Madsen was rescued from the water and arrested.After weeks of fruitless searching, Wall’s body parts (including her torso) were found dismembered and washed up on the shore with 15 stab wounds.
